The Ontarion is led by a governing board of directors comprised of a majority of undergraduate students, providing direct representation and oversight by our primary stakeholder: fee-paying undergraduate students at the University of Guelph.
Though undergraduate students are our primary stakeholder, they are far from the only readership we serve. Our training programs and value proposition may begin with undergrads, but our impact is far-reaching. The Ontarion is read and enjoyed by a wide cross-section of the city of Guelph. From business owners to alumni, Guelph residents and everyone in between, The Ontarion is one of the many bridges that prove a university is a part of the community it finds itself in.
In the office, the editorial department is overseen by our editor-in-chief, who sets the vision and goals for the publication and supports the section editors and production staff in their duties. The editor-in-chief and section editors all take part in guiding our volunteer contributors, who are truly the backbone of The Ontarion. While our typical contributor is a U of G student, anyone may contribute as long as we have room.
The business department is overseen by an executive director, who supervises the editor-in-chief and acts as the newspaper’s publisher. It’s their job to provide continuity, mentorship, training, operations support, and to manage the business as a whole. The business department also consists of a marketing coordinator who helps maintain and expand our readership, sell advertising, and manage our social media presence. Our accountant manages our books and provides financial advice and oversight.
As an incorporated non-profit, we have a membership that meets annually to receive our financial statements and hear relevant updates on the status of and direction of the organization.
